Freeway Fun

Yesterday while driving to and around Salt Lake I saw some things:

First was a billboard. Normally the way lawyers advertise ticks me off but this was funny. It was for a criminal defense attorney: 1-800-NOT GUILTY. I know how I'm using my one phone call. And the quarter the police give you--money in the bank!

Second. Standing on the side of the freeway against the concrete barricade was what appeared to be a mother and two children. A son and a daughter, both looked around 14ish. No broken-down car nearby they were just standing there. And the mother and the daughter were both blindfolded......... The son was.. killing them perhaps.......?

That's Canada for ya

Recently this deer was found just outside of Winnipeg. The working theory is that it was struck by a train. That would've been something to see.

Worth it cause they're short

Remember JibJab.com? If you haven't checked it out recently there's a couple of new cartoons that are kinda funny. This one about George W is alright. And the Ahnuld for Governer one isn't bad either.

Could've happened to any of us

Yesterday Jessica Simpson visited the White House. "The singer was introduced to Interior Secretary Gale Norton and gushed: 'You've done a nice job decorating the White House.'" (washingtonpost.com)

hotmail tip

I think all of you just use Outlook, so this probably won't be helpful but this morning I was messing around with my Hotmail options, trying to beef up security a bit, and for a lark I decided to change the language setting to Dutch. Guess what--no more banner ads.

Movie recommendation

Last night I had the pleasure of watching Head of State. Now normally I'm not a huge Chris Rock fan, and this movie probably won't win any awards... right... but it's a definite must see once. Unbelievably corny sometimes but the gratuitous slapping more than makes up for it and for Rock's occasional preachiness. And Bernie Mac is just hilarious.

I was going to include a link to the trailer but it spoils the spontaneity of one of the funniest moments in the movie and generally doesn't do a very good job representin'--so don' go lookin' for it neiva.

**1/2 Rated PG-13 for black characters with speaking roles.

I got a fever

And the only prescription--is more Coldcure, baby!

Nice mix DJ Sorens. I'm guessing Germany is the same way; in Holland no one plays instruments everyone is a DJ. All the kids have their favorite "DJ so-n-so". There was a kid in one of my wards, his tenth birthday was coming up. "What do you want for your birthday?" we'd ask. Invariably the answer came back, "Ik wil DJ stuff."

Fit to be tied!

So today a friend of mine (to protect her identity we'll call her Dorothy-Elizabeth Windentoppersonsmythe) says to me, "my aunt's sister is crazy."

"Go on," I told Dorothy-Elizabeth, very much intrigued. The story goes as follows:

A few years back D-E's aunt's sister was at a park or something. And there was an infant there crying. Not seeing any parents around she decided to comfort the child herself, the best way she could think of. She proceded to NURSE SOME STRANGER'S KID!!!

There are no words for how I would feel if I were the parent--but I imagine I would uncontrollably turn inside out.

She Bangs!

Probably you are all already familiar with American Idol sensation William Hung. If not let me introduce you. Since being rejected by American Idol he has made numerous tv appearances, he sang at a basketball halftime show, and has been offered a recording contract--which he said he would have to think about. I'm sorry I couldn't find a clip from the actual halftime show but here's some footage from a rehearsal.

An alternative to thumb twiddling

Like many of you, I suffer from having too much time on my hands. In my search to fill the empty hours I have discovered some addicting online games I think you all might enjoy.

First is Spear Toss. With it's gentle ukulele and soothing ocean sounds, one toss will sweep you off to an island paradise. If anyone makes the top 10 list let me know.

Next, for you Settlers of Catan fans, our friends over at Northwestern have made a pretty good online version. Thanks to space-aged technology and a tweeking of the rules, an average game can be played in about 10 minutes. So that you're not lost NTRR means No Trading and when a seven is rolled you must Return the Robber to either a neutral or one of you're own spaces--no stealing. You'll find a lot of Europeans have discovered this site. In the couple of times I've played I've met two Dutch guys and a Dutch speaking African from one of the colonies.

Best Picture

The greatest disappointment from the Academy Awards was that School of Rock wasn't even nominated for best picture. A classic in every respect, it was released on DVD today!

Greetings all! I have decided to join the ranks of bloggerhood with a blog of my own. Um, still getting a feel for things here. Interestingness to follow.
